LA REVOLUCIÓN SERÁ CON CUMBIAS O NO SERÁ (2015) volada for orchestra based on a song by Chico Trujillo and a grafiti outside my house
performers: Julian Kuerti (conductor), Universidad de Concepción Symphony Orchestra
there's actually only a couple of the contemporary-classical pieces i wrote from 2009
to 2016 that i keep online-- this is the one i like the most. it translates roughly to
"REVOLUTION WILL BE WITH CUMBIAS OR WILL NOT BE", which was written in a wall just outside from where my parents live.
honestly revolution as a concept has never really left my imaginary; either revolution,
the end of the world, the fall of patriarchy, these big abstract events always end up returning to my imaginary somehow.
i don't really have much factual faith in them though, so it's a bit cynical, but that's the way things are,
and particularly in this country we know that so well.
anyways i basically composed it thinking of two clashing sonic worlds:
20-21th century-inspired contemporary classical music, and cumbia
(which is a popular type of urban music in latin america), and playing
around with how these two imaginaries could intertwine and share musical elements
and parameters with each other. for the cumbia part, i quoted the song "Loca" by
chilean band Chico Trujillo. at the end i also quoted "El pueblo unido jamás será vencido" by
Sergio Ortega, on an ending that -alongside the lights fading out that i indicated for that part-
gets really emotional i think. i have known of people tearing up in that ending, and i remember someone whistling to
the melody on the premiere. there's something there that speaks to the core of our history and
that is hard to put in words.
after writing this piece i followed with a 20 minutes
long orchestral piece and i sent it to a couple of places to test my luck,
but never got a new performing opportunity in the classical-contemporary music world ever since.
it's sad to see your ideas on a score and not even being able to hear them live once. so that's when i said that's that,
i will try something else. that's when i started learning production so i wouldn't have to depend
on other people and institutions to make my work come to sound.
anyways here's some cute cats i found
