some loose thoughts !!
- i started it in 2023 i think, initially trying out ideas in a bunch of different songs, from which i selected these 5
- denpa (music) has been a medium for me to explore femininity beyond hegemonic western binaries and to say things that i don't think i would have felt comfortable saying otherwise and that's why it is so important for this work
- i have also tried to make the most out of our forced algorithmic livelihoods, the texts that emerge from it, and i tried to bring them to the songwriting process (very vague but will expand on this later)
- one very specific aspect i love about japanese music is the existence of songs about (idk how else to put it) gratefulness: about the experience of joy and feeling thankful about experiencing smt or having someone in your life. (is it too crazy to say that i barely see this on western music?). feeling grateful is a very complex emotion i think, there is a mix of love fear and longing altogether ... two very dear songs to me that come to mind are oyasumi by kyary pamyu pamyu and birthday song for miku by mitchie m. the latter exemplifies the birthday song, which is a whole line of its own within japanese songwriting. so i decided i wanted to write my own, and addressed it to kasane teto-- i always post about her birthday bc i feel a lot in common with teto's background story (similar age, not being taken seriously, trying to fight your way out to sing despite all odds). tho in all honestly, i was actually with my dog deisi when i wrote it and there is as much addressed to her on this song too
- expanding on loving fictional characters, virtual idols and non human animals, i think a lot about how these experiences show the need in some of us for extended expressions of relationships to find emotional connection, even if in simulated intimacies
- that's why i wish yuri was real. even if it's within a yuri simulation
- also i don't care about the lp/ep distinction and i hate that a shorter album is considered less conceptually substantial somehow
